Cold War Kids, Part One

Cold War Kids, Part Two

I've been ruminating on the late 1950's and the early 1960's, on The Cold War and the fear and anxiety that it placed in school children of the time. I thought of Khrushchev of course and the way he was portrayed in the press and the black and white TV news.

Upon doing some internet research I found that his son Sergei is a U.S. citizen who teaches at Brown University. The irony of this is not lost on me and my fellow Baby Boomers. This broadside is dedicated to Sergei Khrushchev and my friend Jeff Fargus who I'm sure recalls huddling under his desk too.
History is a fun house mirror and every generation that peers into it sees something different.

Red Car

Red Car

I'm a car, a red one.
Not your favorite make
or model
but sturdy and reliable.

American made
probably older than
your oldest son,
I travel the back roads mostly.

Outdated but fuel efficient
I ramble.
Parts are getting scarce
and so are good mechanics.

Florence

Claribel and I have been invited to exhibit our books at Bucknell University next spring. We will be showing one of a kind books and editioned works along with our friend David Moyer of Red Howler Press. David is a wood engraver, artist, printer and all around master of the book arts. We collaborated on Archimedes last fall and have been involved in various projects together. Our thank you to Isabella O'Neill of Bucknell Special Collections for this opportunity.

I'll post a link to the exhibit when one becomes available. I'm posting images of Claribel's new one of a kind book, Florence, which she took to Florence, Italy this week to a painting conference. The book is constructed accordion style and the pages are hinged so the book may be viewed page by page or opened up up flat to be seen as a panorama.

Sea & Sand

Our new book is Sea & Sand. It's comprised of a series of photographs Claribel sent me via cell phone while she was travelling about in February. The "sea" is the Pacific Ocean near Point Lobos, California and the "sand" in the Arizona desert. She has written short descriptive notes to accompany each photo.

The photos are digitally printed on Hahnemühle iBugra paper. The covers are paper over boards, handmade from various repulped scraps and the front covers each bear an original painting by Claribel. Sea & Sand is an "accordion" style format book published in an edition of ten copies.

Below is a photo of the covers and a selection of photos from the book.

Archimedes Paintings/Covers

This is a selection of some of the paintings Claribel did for the Archimedes book. There are five paintings reproduced within the book to accompany the poems and each book in the edition of ten has an original painting as the front cover. The paintings are high energy and color-dense, evoking the spirit of the poems in a dramatic, bold and masterful style. As covers on the books, they are stunning!
